 Paintings

My work is a subconscious expression of the soul, expressed through the use of colour and movement of paint. I paint as an emotional response to a situation at that particular time. It is like a journey of expression working itself upon the canvas. I try and translate my energy as a form of colour, marks, lines, and texture on canvas. I am interested in the relationships between colour and how different colours and forms can evoke different feelings when place next to one another. In some areas of my paintings I focus purely on the movement of the marks and how the paint is applied to the canvas. I layer the paint on top of each other until I’m happy with the form that is created. You can see the process of different movements and energies of the paint that are layered on top of each other. The process tells a story of how the paint evolved there, through the different dimensions and layers. With the addition of colour, this creates more depth and adds another dimension; the same applies with texture. The painting creatively continues to expand and grow naturally.
In some of my works I use gold leaf. I enjoy using this material as if reflects light, and light is ever changing depending on where the light is reflecting. I like this varied, changing movement of light in the paintings. It is a metaphor of constant change that is there throughout life. I like to travel to and feel the energy of a place, and look at the colours and shapes that resonate with that environment, and then use them in my work to depict that place or person, I am particularly interested in researching those aspects in relation to my identity. These aspects range from the places I am from; England and Zanzibar, to the people I meet. Through the medium of painting I hope to translate these ideas, thoughts and concepts; in a way, it can be read as a 'visual language'.
